“A Magical Adventure to Whangdoodleland”

Join me on a spectacular journey in search for the most extraordinary creature in the world: The Whangdoodle.  Along with the Potter children and Professor Savant, we will embark on an adventure to help the Whangdoodle save his kingdom and discover the importance of working together. Between the Whangdoodle and main characters, there are many other beloved animals in The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles to explore and learn about. This book would be perfect for upcoming fourth or fifth graders to jump into this summer and discover not only the challenges and dangers the children must face in Whangdoodleland, but also the joys of friendship and the wonders of our own imagination! Students will get the chance to showcase their artistic skills and create their own Whangdoodleland character to share with their peers. As a class, we will read the book together, discuss our whacky characters and their traits, and work our way through a magical land to save the very last Whangdoodle.

Artistic Zoology

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 4th, 5th, 6th Grade in Fall of 2019

How does a chameleon’s skin appear to change color? How are parrots able to imitate speech and sounds? Explore the intersections between art and science as you learn about different species while making art inspired by them! This heavily choice-based curriculum allows students to delve into their own interests, in which they will conduct research on their own favorite animals and develop a plan to design and construct a representation of that animal. Learn to see and appreciate the beauty in many of the diverse animals that inhabit the Earth.

Be Your Own Author

What do you do with all those thoughts when you're riding in the car? How do you remember those silly dreams at night? Join a creative writing class and learn all the tools you need to write your own creative stories, no matter what the topic may be! From fairy tales to real life experiences, you can create your own stories to share!

Board Game Design Lab

Play, Design, & Build your own 3D game board complete with board pieces, cards, obstacles, and theme. Predict, analyze and record the probability of winning games. Create your own fun, learn new games, & challenge yourself to a whole new level. You’ll never have to say you’re bored again!

Book Club: Reading for Fun

Want some time to read a book you pick out for fun? Bring your book to class, make a plan on how much you're going to read and by when, and then you get to read in class and enjoy your book! On Fridays we'll share your opinions of your book and discuss them. Be careful, you may hear about your next favorite read!

Build Your Own Country

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th Grade in the Fall of 2019

Have you ever wanted to be in charge of your own country?  Well, in this class you're the boss! You'll use your creativity to create and design all the different parts of your country.  This includes writing laws, designing a flag, composing a national anthem, describing the landscape, and so much more! The possibilities are endless!

Co-ed Basketball Skills

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 5th, 6th Grade in the Fall of 2019

Period Two (Fox)

Class Fee $5.00

Boys and girls learn the fundamentals of ball handling, dribbling, shooting, passing, defense, teamwork, and fair play. Fun basketball games and drills will be incorporated to ensure having “fun” while learning the basics. Good sportsmanship is discussed and expected.

Coding Club

Students will follow the self paced Google CS first curriculum to learn how to tell stories and design games using the Scratch based coding program.

Dance! Dance! Dance!

Come join us as we dance our summer away! This all new course will focus on dance techniques that fit together to complete routines we will want to show off!   Increase strength, flexibility, and balance all while learning how dancing influences healthy living choices and helps you exhibit a positive attitude that supports a team.

Designer in a Day

Take a peek and discover tips and tricks inside the wonderful and exciting world of interior design! As an interior designer you will be able to build, design, and coordinate furniture models, flooring, accessories, and more. We will also incorporate and learn about fabrics, wall décor, and other design details. Our fun projects will include: funky floors, signature wall décor, and new design trends. Weekly creative design studio offers hands-on projects you design to further explore and highlight your home interior design creations. Note:  If you took House Hunters last summer, we will be doing different projects for this class.

Drama Club

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th Grade in the Fall of 2019

In this club you will experience the challenge of acting out different parts of a real play. We will also engage in different dramatic and fun games along the way to prepare for our final project. This project will be to perform a fun play in front of an audience of parents and peers.  

 

Fun in the Sun

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 3rd, 4th, 5th Grade in the Fall of 2019

Enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities in Fun in the Sun. We will spend the majority of our time playing softball, kickball, capture the flag, tag games, and much more! Bring sunscreen and a water bottle and get your exercise playing fun games and soaking up the sun of the summer. One day each week is reserved for a wet and wild experience as we will play in the water and try to stay cool.

 

Future Picassos!

Do you have an interest in art, but are tired of simply coloring and painting at home? This class is the perfect outlet for budding Picassos! Exploring Art introduces young artists to many different mediums to create art with in an atmosphere that strengthens motor large and fine motor skills as well as develops a positive sense of self and creativity! Don't know how to make something? That's okay! Whatever you think it should be is how it should be!

Game On - Outdoors!  

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 4th, 5th, 6th Grade in Fall of 2019

This outdoor class is jam-packed with great group games that use strategy, teamwork and imagination. Play fun invasion games like Capture the Flag and Pirate Ball. Use your problem-solving skills in games such as the Amazing Race and Gilligan’s Island. We won’t forget fun classic games (but with exciting new twists!) like Kickball, Steal the Bacon, and Tag. Students will also use collaboration and imagination to create new games! Bring your water bottle and be ready to move! These are physically active games that emphasize teamwork and good sportsmanship.

Geo-caching: Ready, Set, Seek

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 3rd, 4th, 5th Grade in the Fall of 2019

Do you like scavenger hunts? Being outside? Then you will love geo-caching! Geo-caching is an activity that uses written clues, landmarks as well as longitude and latitude to both hide and find secretly placed treasures.  You will learn all about geo-caching, find out where these treasures are hiding in your community as well as all around the World! We will create our own geo-caches in addition to finding treasures around North Lake school.  Some caches (the fancy name for the hidden object) contain fun trinkets and YOU get to take/trade them. There's also a cool thing called a TRAVEL BUG , hint it isn't an actual insect, it's a special item that travels across the world to get to a particular cache. Let's have fun exploring the world of geo-caching.

Guitar Academy

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th Grade in the Fall of 2019

Want to learn how to play guitar? Join our group guitar class. No prior experience needed! Students will learn the basics of both finger picking and chord playing on acoustic guitars in this course. Students are welcome to borrow a Summer School guitar, or may bring their own from home. Please no electric instruments. Each player will go home with guitar music book.

Gym Games Galore

Gym Games Galore offers students an awesome opportunity to participate in various indoor sports and activities. Activities and sports include the following: Pirate Ball, Floor Hockey, Kick Ball, Basketball, Dodgeball, Indoor Soccer, Matball, Handball, Capture the Flag, and Speedball.

Mini Medic

Do you frequently get hurt, or know an animal or person who does? Do you like people and animals? This class is designed for the future medic, teaching you the fundamentals of biology, trauma care, first aid, and prevention.  Medics will learn basic organ systems and structures, how diseases spread, wound care and suturing, how to enter and exit a sterile field, and much more!

If birds, flowers, and the great outdoors inspire your creativity, then this is the class for you! We will combine nature (i.e. insects, rocks, etc.) with various art techniques and projects to showcase your love of the outdoors and art. Projects will include: a 3D flower, yarn bird, nature frame, and many more interesting creations. Weekly nature art studio incorporates different materials for you to craft, create, and design your own nature masterpieces.  *note: If you took Nature Nook last summer, we will be doing different projects for this class.

Rockin Roller Coasters

Scrapbooking and Paper Art

This class will combine scrapbooking and paper art. Come try your hand at Origami, the art of Japanese paper folding. Using your pictures and memories combined with your writing, you will create a scrapbook to treasure forever. Start gathering your favorite pictures! You will also design cards and other paper creations.  

Sewing and Jewelry

Do you like jewelry? Do you want to learn how to sew? Then this is the class for you!  We’ll use a variety of different materials to make all kinds of creative jewelry. Create and sew your own felt monster and fleece tie pillow. The possibilities are endless! 

Special Education Reading and Math

Students enrolled are recommended by their special education teacher. Small group instruction that targets IEP goals in reading and math is meant to maintain skills gained during the school year. Some support is available for general education classes.

 

Speech and Debate: The Art of Forensics

GRADE LEVEL: Students entering 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th Grade in the Fall of 2019

Class Fee $3.00

Channel natural competitive energy into positive communication strategies, prepare a good speech, discover where to go to find sources and materials, learn how to begin and end a speech, and prepare speaker notes. You will learn, from experience, how to analyze an audience, dress for success, and present yourself as an articulate speaker. Students will research and create a presentation for classmates and parents during the last week of class.

Sports Galore

Spy School

Seeking new recruits for this summer spy academy. After initiation, you will be trained in the art of observation, camouflage, impersonation and tracking. We will play games to hone your skills, and ultimately it will be up to you to discover who among you is a double agent. We will follow in the adventures of the book series, Spy School.

The Science of Baking

Do you love to bake? Do you enjoy doing experiments? If so,  this is the class for you! In this class, you will learn about the science behind baking.  You will learn about the scientific method, physical and chemical changes, acids and bases, the use of leavening agents, and so much more.  You will participate in lots of experiments and have plenty of baking opportunities.

Traveling Around the World

Let's explore different countries and cultures around the world! Students will learn about different countries and their traditions, dress, food (cooking), and landmarks.
